Is My Child Too Young To Visit Disney World?

Many parents want to take their young children to Disney World (or Disneyland) but wonder if their children are too young to go. There are a few things for you to think about when deciding whether to go to Disney.

Accomodations

If you stay at a Disney World Resort, it might feel a little cramped. If you have a baby or small child, it might be best to find a rental. The sky is the limit with the amount of properties around Orlando. For example, I rented a house earlier this year so my toddler could have her own room to sleep in. Besides renting houses, you could also rent a condo or rent a timeshare from Disney Vacation Club owners.

Fitting the whole family in a small hotel room can be stressful regardless of how old your children are. Whether it’s sharing beds or finding transportation to and from the parks, it’s hard for anyone to be comfortable. When searching for your accommodations, you might want to try looking into renting a timeshare suite from existing Disney Vacation Club owners. They’re usually located right among the major theme parks and they rooms are equipped with kitchens, living rooms, and separate bedrooms. Can you imagine being able to make breakfast in your room before leaving for the day? It will save time, money, and hopefully a few less meltdowns.

Height Requirement

Be aware that many rides require a certain height requirement. Some rides do not require a particular height. You can see the age or heigh requirements of the Disney World attractions here. I have taken children from the age of 17 months and older. Of course my 17 month old did not go on certain rides. However, my husband used the baby swap option or figured out a way for us to have fun. It did not inconvenience us. If you have teenagers, then this may pose a problem.

Emotional Maturity

Nothing irritates/saddens/angers me more than seeing a child who is too young or too scared to go on a ride but the parent(s) forces their scared child onto the ride. Many small children or toddlers should NOT go on certain rides, even if there is not a height requirement.
I remember riding Tower of Terror and a very small child was crying very hard because he had rode in 5 times already and was scared each time. The mother was annoyed because she wanted to ride it. Don’t be selfish. Your child comes first (if you are THAT mom, yes, that was me who spoke up to defend your child who ended up throwing up because YOU forced your child on to the ride). Don’t ever force a child onto a ride. Be prepared to NOT ride certain rides if your child is not mature enough for the ride.

Ticket Costs

Be aware that children at the age of 3 is charged to go to Disney World. If you are deciding which date to go to Disney World, it might be best to go the week your child is free if your child.

Memory

Many children will not remember visiting Disney if they go at an age that is too young. If this is not important to you, then this may not be an issue. I went to Disney when I was 5 years old, and I remember it. However, my husband went around the same age, and he does not remember visiting.
My husband and I took my son to WDW on a spontaneous trip when he just turned 2 (the beach trip went sour). We had a great time at WDW. My son does not remember the trip.
We took my son back when he was 4. This was 6 months ago from the writing of this post. He still remembers going and certain details that I don’t even remember! Will he remember going to WDW in 10 years? Who knows.

If you want to go to Disney World for YOU to have fun, then I recommend going regardless of your child’s age. However, if you have the expectation that you want your child to remember this trip for years and to be able to ride all of the attractions, then it is best for you to wait.

It’s a Small World Ride at Disney World

This ride needs no introduction. Everyone has heard of this ride, It’s a Small World. This was my favorite ride when I was a child. I can remember hearing this song over and over again. Why on earth does this make me teary eyed?
